CONTINUOUS CASTINGBOTTOM POURINGCOVERING COMPOUNDS |

Exothermic Starting Powders
The exothermic reaction minimizes heat loss in the mould at the start of the cast.
The rapid formation of slag protects the steel from contact with the atmosphere and improves lubrication at the start of the cast, thus increasing yield.
As starting powders are carbon-free, they are especially suited for steel grades with low carbon contents.
Fine Mould Powders
Scorialit is a fine-grained mixture with the grain size depending on the raw materials used. The powder has the following functions:
- Lubrication between the solidifying strand and mould wall
- Control of heat transfer between the strand and mould
- Thermal insulation of the liquid steel surface
- Prevention of re-oxidation
- Inclusion absorption
Spray-Dried Mould Powders
Scorialit SPH is a hollow-sphere product, with the same functions as fine powders:
- Lubrication between the solidifying strand and mould wall
- Control of heat transfer between the strand and mould
- Thermal insulation of the liquid steel surface
- Prevention of re-oxidation
- Inclusion absorption
Bottom Pouring Powders
Thermotect and Scorialit are fine grained mixtures. The grain size depends on the raw materials used. The powders have the following functions:
- Thermal insulation of the liquid steel surface
- Prevention of re-oxidation
- Inclusion absorption
Exothermic Antipiping Compounds
Exolupu is an exothermic, fine-grained mixture with the grain size dependent on the raw materials used. The powder has the following functions:
- Expansion in volume providing very high insulating properties
- Exothermic reaction to heat the top of the ingot
Acidic Covering Compounds
Metallurgica distinguishes between two types of acidic covering compounds:
- Rice ash, with high levels of thermal insulation
- Fly ash mixtures, with high levels of thermal insulation and protection against re-oxidation
Basic Covering Powders
Metallurgica distinguishes between two different types of basic covering powders:
- Spray-dried covering powders based on magnesite, with good thermal insulation properties, protection against re-oxidation and low refractory erosion.
- Calcium aluminates, which offer the potential for oxide pick-up and protection against re-oxidation. Because such materials have poor insulating properties, it is necessary to add an additional insulating compound on top.
